Liu Jipiao’s First Solo Exhibit
Dear Friends,
I can’t believe it’s been over 15 since we started this journey!! I am ecstatic to announce that my grandfather is having his first solo exhibit at the school he worked so hard to create back in the late 1920’s. Back then it was the Hangzhou National Academy of Art. Today it is known as the China Academy of Art (CAA).
The China Design Museum (CDM) in Hangzhou, China has curated an extensive look at LJP’s design, architectural and art works in “Oriental Phidias, Rediscovering Liu Jipiao Art Exhibition”. The show will run from December 28, 2024 to April 15, 2025. I went to China this summer and had the honor of meeting and working with Curator/Researcher, Gao Xi, the wonderful staff of the CDM and Philippe Cinquini who curated the Paris section of the exhibit!
It is very interesting to see what the team has put together and I can’t wait to see the exhibit in it’s entirety! I’ve always seen LJP as my grandfather, not a visionary or a founder. As to his artwork, I liked what I liked. It has been an experience to see his artwork in a historical context and interesting to see what pieces the gallery chose to illustrate his influence in the field of pattern and design. There is also much information on LJP’s life in Paris and his early influences that are brought to light in this exhibit!
I hope you all can see it if you happen to be in town. If not, I have been told there will be a video walkthrough created which I can hopefully share with you all.
I feel that the timing of this is perfect as we are coming on the 100th anniversary of the Paris Expo of 1925! My grandfather played a major part in the designing of the China Section located in the Grande Palais.
I am also excited because the World Congress on Art Deco 2025 will be held in Paris this coming year! I hope to see you all there!
