National Gallery Singapore Exhibit

Liu Jipiao’s family is honored to be a part of the National Gallery Singapore Exhibit, “City of Others: Asian Artists in Paris, 1920s-1940s” . It is especially timely as we are coming up on the 100th year anniversary fo the Paris Exposition of 1925 which opened on April 28, 1925!

There’s More to Paris Than Meets the Eye

In the 1920s-40s, Paris was a “city of others”—a meeting point for migrants and visitors from around the world. Coming from places where modern art was already evolving on its own path, artists from Asia journeyed to Paris to further their art practice and careers. Paris was a site of creative exuberance, diversity and opportunity for artists, but could also one be of exploitation, racism and resistance.

City of Others: Asian Artists in Paris, 1920s-1940s” is groundbreaking exhibition that examines the art history of Paris from Asian perspectives. The exhibition compares the experiences of Asian artists in Paris during a dynamic period of time, featuring works by artists such as Foujita Tsuguharu, Georgette Chen, Lê Phổ, Liu Kang, Pai Un-soung, Itakulla Kanae, Hamanaka Katsu, and more!

Here is a small brochure the gallery has printed and we expect a full catalog in a couple months! If you are in Singapore, the exhibit is running til August 2025.
